A Brief Look at BMW's All-Electric Cars from the 1970s to Today

On July 25, BMW’s first dedicated i Store opened its doors at London’s Park Lane, right next to the BMW and Mini dealerships, a year and a half before the i3 premium city car rolls off the production line at the company’s Leipzig plant.

The i3 was previewed by a concept study at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The prototype is powered by a 170HP electric motor, although BMW has revealed that the production model will also feature a range-extending gasoline engine that will work as a battery generator.

That much you may know as the Munich-based automaker has been promoting its i sub-brand heavily, the most recent example being the i3 Coupe, a three-door version of the 2011 study.

Funny Things BMW 3-Series E36 Owners Say

It's been a while in internet time, but there's a good chance some of you may remember a video titled "Sh!t Honda Guys Say", which made fun of owners of the Japanese brand's cars.

Now it's time for a similarly-themed and named satire that targets drivers of the third generation BMW 3-Series, codenamed E36, that was built from 1991 through 1998.

Was BMW Right or Wrong to Rebadge the 3-Series Coupe as the 4-Series?

The first ever BMW 3-Series, built from 1973 to 1985 and known by its internal codenamed E21, was offered only as a coupe. Yes, there was a convertible variant available through BMW's dealers but it was made by Baur, so it doesn't really count.

As the years passed by and the 3-Series became more and more successful on a global basis, BMW wanted to bank on that success and so it expanded the lineup to include sedans in both regular, and for China, long-wheelbase versions, three-door hatchbacks (E36 and E46 only), estates, convertibles and the famed M variants.

BMW's Sexy 4-Series Coupe Concept Officially Unveiled Before Detroit Auto Show [61 Photos]

BMW’s new 3-Series based coupe, which officially adopts the 4-Series moniker, has been making the rounds for quite some time now. Just a few hours ago, the first pictures of the car that will make its debut as a concept at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show were leaked online, so BMW decided there was no point in keeping it a secret anymore.

The brand with the roundel logo says it ditched the 3-Series Coupe moniker in favor of the “4” because it wants to differentiate it from its compact saloon and at the same time, underline the new model’s stature in its line-up that will use even numbers for coupes (or four-door sports saloons in the case of the Gran Coupes).

The new 4-Series measures 4,641 mm long, 1,826 mm wide and 1,362 mm tall, which means it’s longer (by 29 mm /1.1 inches), broader (by 44 mm /1.7 inches) and lower (by 16 mm / 0.6 inches) than the current 3-Series Coupe.

Compared to the model it will replace, it also boasts a 50 mm (2-inch) longer wheelbase that stands at 2,850 mm. Moreover, its 1,545 mm front and 1,593 mm rear tracks are 45 and 80 mm (1.8 and 3.1 inches) wider respectively.

BMW Celebrates DTM Dominance with New M3 DTM Champion Limited Edition

After an 18-year absence, BMW returned to the German Touring Car Championship, i.e. the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) this year to fight off archrivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

The obvious choice for the model its racer would be based upon was the M3 coupe. DTM organizers had changed the rules and enforced many restrictions in order to ensure close competition – so every last detail was crucial in the M3’s battle against the A5 Coupe and the C-Class Coupe.

New BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept Photos Leak on the Web; Think it's a Looker?

Official imagery of the all-new and for the most part, production ready BMW Concept 4-Series was leaked onto the internet today, several weeks ahead of the car's world premiere at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show.

The concept study confirms the different nomenclature BMW has chosen for the coupe, convertible and the Gran Coupe sports sedan variants of the F30 generation 3-Series.

So how close is the study to the production model that will follow next year? Well, BMW has a tradition of lightly masking upcoming models and naming them concepts. All you have to do is look at the 2010 Concept 6-Series to see that the Concept 4-Series is 99 percent ready.

The only components we see changing are the tail lamp graphics, the rear bumper design and the full leather treatment with accent stitching for the interior that shares the same dashboard with the 3-Series Sedan and Touring models.

New Cadillac ATS 3.6 vs. BMW 335i and Mercedes C350 in MT's 6-Cylinder Rematch

Like the VW Golf, the BMW 3-Series has been dominant for so long, shrugging off one newcomer after another, that it practically defined the premium compact sports sedan segment.

This, of course, makes it not only harder for BMW engineers to come up with something better every time there's a replacement due, but it also makes it the car all rivaling manufacturers have set as their benchmark.

Cadillac has made quite a fuss about its new ATS being a bona-fide, Nürburgring-bred sports saloon that can take on the best – i.e. the brand new, F30 3-Series.

This BMW 3-Series E30 Runs on a Ford-Sourced 302 V8

BMW's first ever 3-Series sedan model, the E30, remains a fairly popular choice among enthusiasts of the brand with the blue and white roundel, but finding a pristine example is becoming more and more difficult as the years roll by.

It’s not unusual for owners of E30s that have been around the block one time too many to swap the model's factory inline-four and six-cylinder engines with different powerplants, often from other brands.

Scoop: BMW's New 4-Series Gran Coupe Parades on the 'Ring and on the Road for the Camera

Calling a four-door sedan a coupe is clearly a paradox, but the German auto industry has managed to bring the term into mainstream culture with cars like the Volkswagen CC and Mercedes-Benz CLS, which are both described by their respective makers as "four-door coupes".

BMW has coined its own term for these types of models, the "Gran Coupe" moniker that debuted on the 6-Series saloon, and which will soon find its way on a 3-Series based model named the 4-Series Gran Coupe, or at least that's what we have been hearing for the past couple of years.

Best Spy Shots Yet of the All-New 2014 BMW 4-Series Coupe

The F30-generation of BMW's popular 3-Series Coupe, which from what we have heard, will likely be renamed to the 4-Series, has been caught out in the open wearing very little camouflage - at least when compared to previous prototypes.

Our scoop photographer tells us that the F32 4-Series Coupe was captured in BMW's home town of Munich in Germany, while it was being loaded to a truck for an "internal presentation", though, we could not independently confirm this at the time we wrote the article.

It's worth mentioning that earlier today, Car&Driver magazine reported that BMW will present a thinly disguised concept of the 4-Series Coupe at the 2013 Detroit auto show in January, citing inside sources. We wouldn't be surprised if this is the "near-production concept" the publication was referring to.

The name may be different, but all the design cues from the 3-Series sedan are here including the flatter and more prominent front end with the traditional double kidney grilles.

Watch BMW's Optional M Performance Steering Wheel with Race Display in Action

Some might say it is a yet another gimmick and a distraction or one more electronic accessory to worry about, but BMW and German motorsports expert and race driver Tim Schrick, beg to differ claiming that the firm's M Performance Steering Wheel with a race display is what the doctor ordered for enthusiasts. Spy Shots: New BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo Loosens up on the Nürburgring

BMW seems hell bent to offer a 3-Series (or 3-Series-based) model for almost every need; from four door sedans in regular and long wheelbase body styles and station wagons, to coupes, convertibles, high performance variants, and even a so-called four-door coupe and a taller liftback model named the 3-Series Gran Turismo (GT).

The latter was spied by our photographers lifting its inner wheel in a corner during testing on the Nürburgring in Germany.

BMW Weekend Track Racer's Drifting Effort Hits a…Wall

This video doesn't really allow us to say with certainty whether the driver of the silver-colored BMW 3-Series coupe (E36) lost control of his car or if he was attempting to force the rear-wheel drive model into a drift by violently turning the steering wheel, but whatever the reason, it didn't end very well… Read more »
