Mini-Me Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S Doesn't Make the Cut at D1GP Drift Event

If you're an avid fan of the art of drifting, you can't go wrong with Japan's D1 Grand Prix or D1GP professional drift series, unless, of course, you stumble upon the wrong car.

We can't say for sure if Gazoo Racing's mini-me Toyota 86 (JDM version of the Scion FR-S) was plagued by a technical problem or if there was nothing wrong and it simply played the role of the rodeo clown, but either way, we can't say we were impressed by its entrance on the track at a recent D1GP drift event in Odaiba, Japan.

Mazda CX-5 Beats Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ, Wins Japan Car of the Year Award

With less than a month remaining until the end of the year, all kinds of “Car of the Year” awards will inadvertently start to pop up. Some, of course, are much more important than others are; and the Japan COTY title belongs to the former category. In 2011, the winner was the Nissan Leaf, which had also been awarded the World and European COTY titles.

This year, Mazda won the crown with its CX-5 compact crossover getting 363 votes, 45 more than the second-placed Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ “twins”. BMW’s 3-Series was third, while it’s interesting to note that the top 10 was evenly split between Japanese and European models.

The Real Steel: Kuratas is a Giant Transformers-Like Robot You Can Drive on the Road

Here's one way to re-discover and bring the inner child that hides in you out in the world: it's named the Kuratas and it comes to us from Japan – could it have been from anywhere else?

The Transformers-like Kuratas is the work of Suidobashi Heavy Industries (SHI) and in particular, artist Kogoro Kurata and robotics expert Wataru Yoshizaki. The 4.5-ton robot stands 4-meters (13.1 feet) tall and can be controlled either by a driver who sits in the cockpit or via a smartphone.

It is capable of reaching speeds of up to 10km/h or 6mph on the road, with SHI also offering the possibility of fitting the robot with guns that in civilian form shoot plastic bottles or fire BB pellets.

In an intro piece about the robot, the Japanese company tells us:

"'KURATAS' is an art piece. It is not a normal vehicle, so it doesn't guarantee your safety and comfort. However, it does makes your dream of becoming a robot pilot comes true."

Hearing this Toyota GX71 Chaser GT Play the Jingles Bells Made Our Day

Sometimes it's the strangest things that can brighten up your day; like watching a video of a group of tuned Japanese sedans rolling down the road when all of a sudden, you hear a familiar tune coming from…the engine of one of those cars.

The admittedly talented driver behind the wheel of the VIP-esque style (with a little bit of imagination) Toyota Chaser GT Twin Turbo series GX71 from the 1980s played the world-famous Jingle Bells tune simply using his right foot and the raspy sounds of the modded powerplant.

Nissan Unveils 2013 Leaf with New Electric Motor, Cheaper S Grade and Weight Savings of 80kg/176lbs

Some two years after its market launch, Nissan has presented an updated version of its Leaf EV that features a number of enhancements, the most important of which concern a new, more compact and significantly lighter electric powertrain, and the addition of a more affordable "S" grade.

The 2013 Leaf was unveiled in Japan on Tuesday, but Nissan officials recently confirmed that a similar suite of upgrades will be applied to the North American version, which will stop being imported from Japan and begin production at the brand's Smyrna factory in Tennessee this December, with sales to start in March 2013. The same should apply for the European version.

As mentioned, the highlight of the 2013 model is the revamped electric powertrain featuring new or redesigned components starting with the new electric motor, which will be used in the updated Leaf as well as the Renault-Nissan group's future hybrid electric vehicles (HEV).

Mercedes-Benz Creates Anime Short Series to Support New A-Class Launch in Japan

You can probably get away using the same promotional materials in related markets (i.e. among European countries), but for the best results in regions where consumers have a different mindset, it's always better to come up with a different idea, one that is tailored to meet local needs.

And this is precisely what Mercedes-Benz's marketing division has done in Japan to support the launch of its brand-new A-Class premium hatchback, which will arrive in showrooms on January 17, 2013.
